This guide covers the 32-bit operating system.
On Ubuntu 8.10 is installed Openoffice.org 2.4 and was overtaken by the latest version 3 of the application. Normally, GNU / Linux systems are updated through the repositories doing a simple sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get upgrade but this case is not so. To install the new version of OpenOffice is a need for manual installation. For manual installation does not mean filling directly the sources of openoffice but only that you must uninstall the old version of the program, download binary (in this case. Deb) of OOo3 and install.
First of all you must remove all packages OOo2.4. Very simple. From a terminal window must execute the command sudo apt-get remove openoffice.org *.* S and confirm the request for confirmation. This will clear the system openoffice but leave the configuration files in your home directory. To clear also the configuration files should go in our home folder cd ~ and check with ls-a whatever they're called files. That should be enough to erase all files starting with. Openoffice then rm.
openoffice * E 'must erase the configuration files of the old version because otherwise you will have problems installing the new. For security
also carry a cleanup of the package system to remove packages no longer required. then launch the command sudo apt-get and confirm with S if we are asked to confirm.
Version 3 can be downloaded from the official site. So at http://it.openoffice.org cliccare su 'Download openoffice 3.1.0', poi su 'Versione Linux DEB'.
This command installs all packages that make up the OpenOffice suite. Missing only one step: the items in the menu. In fact, the newly installed packages have not created the links to the programs of the suite in the menu of Ubuntu. To create them you need to install an additional package. Deb that is located in the desktop-integration. So enter the sub-folder with cd desktop-integration and re-run the command sudo dpkg-i *. deb to start the installation procedure of the menu.
There is one thing to do. In order for you to open documents by double-clicking should right click on the document and select 'Properties'. Tab 'Open with ...' put the ball on openoffice.
